How is ActionClip different from PopClip or Raycast?

What does the free plan include?
The Free plan includes up to 30 action runs per day. The Individual, Family, and Team lifetime plans unlock unlimited actions on one, two, or five Macs respectively. Family and Team also include optional iCloud Sync. Compare plans and pricing.
Does ActionClip need an account?
No ActionClip account is required. Purchases are activated with a license code, and eligible multi-Mac plans can optionally sync selected settings through the user’s own iCloud account. Limited anonymous events never include selected text, prompts, outputs, clipboard contents, API keys, or source app names. Read the Privacy Policy.
Why isn’t ActionClip on the Mac App Store? Is it safe to install?
System-wide text selection and user-created Shell and AppleScript actions require capabilities that do not fit Mac App Store sandbox restrictions. ActionClip is signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so macOS Gatekeeper can verify the download.
What permissions does ActionClip need, and does it run in the background?
ActionClip needs macOS Accessibility permission to read selected text, locate the selection, and show actions nearby. Optional integrations may request Automation, Calendar, Contacts, or other relevant permissions only when you use them. ActionClip runs as a lightweight menu-bar app and does not install a privileged daemon or separate server. Learn how selected text is handled.
Does ActionClip work in every Mac app?
ActionClip works in most apps that expose selected text through macOS Accessibility. Custom editors, remote desktops, and unusual interfaces may behave differently. You can reopen the widget with a shortcut or pause ActionClip for a particular app or website. See widget settings.
When does selected text leave my Mac?
Only an online action you choose to run sends selected text to an external destination. Apple Intelligence and Ollama Local keep supported AI requests on your Mac. Optional iCloud Sync transfers selected settings—not selected text or clipboard contents. Review online actions and privacy.
Can I use ActionClip without AI or an API key?
Yes. Copy, paste, formatting, case conversion, notes, links, word counts, and many conversion actions do not require AI. For AI actions, you can choose on-device Apple Intelligence, Ollama Local, or an optional external provider. Compare AI sources.
Can I create my own actions?
Yes. You can create prompt, JavaScript, URL, Terminal, AppleScript, and workflow actions, either manually or by describing what you want to the Custom Action Builder. Your actions then appear beside selected text like built-in actions. Browse action examples.
Can I move my license to another Mac?
Yes. Each license can be active on the number of Macs included in its purchased plan. Remove the license from the old Mac in ActionClip’s Upgrade page to free that activation, then redeem the same license on the new Mac. Learn about iCloud Sync.
What version of macOS is required?
ActionClip requires macOS 15.0 or later. Some features, including Apple Intelligence, also depend on compatible Mac hardware and macOS availability.
